Israeli President Isaac Herzog has selected former military chief Gadi Eisenkot to attempt to form the country’s next government after an election left parliament without a clear majority.
Reuters reported on 7 November 2026 that Eisenkot received the most recommendations during consultations with political factions. However, the seat arithmetic remains complicated: no straightforward coalition has emerged, and the support of parties that recommended him does not automatically guarantee a stable governing majority.
Eisenkot has 28 days to negotiate, with a possible two-week extension. If he cannot assemble a government, the process may move to another candidate and could ultimately lead to another election.
Why it matters: The negotiations will shape Israel’s political direction and could affect policy on security, the economy and regional diplomacy.
