Indian equities ended the week on a strong note ahead of Diwali, with the Sensex and Nifty each gaining nearly 9% over the week, according to a Hindustan Times report published on Saturday. The report described the advance as the strongest weekly rise for both benchmarks since February 2021.
What supported the rally?
The report pointed to lower crude oil prices, renewed foreign investor buying and hopes of easing geopolitical tensions as factors supporting sentiment. It said foreign portfolio investors bought a net ₹22,693 crore of Indian equities during the week, including primary-market investments.
Sectoral indices also advanced. Consumer Durables led the reported gains, while Realty and Financial Services were among the stronger-performing sectors.
Analysts urge caution
Market commentators cautioned that the rally may not prove durable without sustained investment inflows, stable oil prices and stronger corporate earnings. The report noted that the advance was partly driven by expectations around geopolitical developments, which can change quickly.
What investors should watch
Investors will be watching crude prices, foreign flows, company results and global market sentiment. A strong week does not guarantee that markets will continue rising. This report is for general information and is not investment advice.
